View your time in the gym as your own personal time, where you can have full control over everything you do without any interruptions. There’s nothing more frustrating than trying to complete an exercise when your phone rings. Leave it in your locker! Also keep gossiping to a minimum. Without trying to appear rude, you’re in the gym for a reason and regular unplanned breaks will diminish the effectiveness of any training.
With the above in mind, the purpose of training in pairs isn’t so you can talk your way through a session! Previous research has demonstrated that an individual feels more confident and is more likely to lift a greater resistance when training in a pair. The simple reason is, not only will you end up competing against your training partner, but they will give you the necessary physical support to be able to test greater resistance.
There’s no point in lifting a ridiculous amount of weight if you have to develop your own technique to be able to do this! Not only will this ultimately result in injury, of which I’m almost certain, but the likelihood is that you won’t be targeting the correct muscle groups in this altered state. Always follow good technique and never substitute good form for a little extra resistance. In the long term this could prove critical.
The order in which you complete your workout is almost as importance as the workout itself. If you are looking to undertake both resistance and cardio in a session then always ensure that your weights are completed primarily. Otherwise, you will soon notice decrements in your lifting capabilities. Likewise, consider whether you are going to opt for free or machine weights, compound or isolation movements as initial exercises.
